My experience has deepened my compassion and admiration towards immigrants and ex-pats throughout the world. I’m inspired and moved by the grit and iron-clad determination that I’ve witnessed from numerous individuals within these groups. We’re all navigating our unique quests simultaneously to find a place we call home and establish a life of pride, liberty, and happiness.

After getting locked out of our condo, I went into Mr. Quickie to have some extra keys made. While the store clerk cut my keys, she energetically belted Whitney Houston’s song, “All at Once” that was blaring from the small radio next to the cash register. I instinctively wanted to hug her, then ask her to tell me her secret sauce to happiness. As I left, she said, “Take care always”, almost as if she were uttering a sincere prayer.

What I have learnt is that the effort needs to come from both sides. If you are the only one who is the first to send a text, and first to make contact and remind them that you are still here even if you are far away, eventually you take the hint and stop making the first move.
